Dinning Room Set

This dinning room table and two chairs were given to us for free from one of my mother’s coworkers. The table had definitely been through a lot, and they were just going to take it to the dump given the condition it was in. Rogan needed a dinning room set for his new apartment at school though, so we decided to give it a major face lift.

When we got the table, there were dents, scratches, paint stains, and chips in the table. The chairs were in a little better condition than the table top was but still needed some work. The color was a brown similar to a chestnut color with a varnish finish on them. With this finish on, and the shape of the pieces, we knew with the tools we had we wouldn’t be able to sand everything down to the bare wood without damaging the shape. This made our decision to paint these three pieces a lot easier.

Rogan’s apartment has darker wood flooring, as you can see in the picture, dark cabinetry, and tan walls. Given there was already so much brown in the place, we wanted to stick to the color theme (since we can’t change anything about the apartment), but didn’t want it to dull down the place more. This is where we decided to paint the legs/base of the table white to help elevate it from the floor and brighten up the piece against the rest of the room. Rogan didn’t quite see my vision for white legs and a brown table top, but he soon came around.

Before painting, we did sand down the table top to get out all of the dents and smooth out any chips in the wood. That ended up being a pretty easy fix. We chose to paint the table top and chairs Espresso Brown with a satin finish and used the Rust-Oleum paint&primer in one spray paint. We used the same brand for the white legs and the gold metal accents on the legs of the table. The table and chairs took about 6 bottles of brown after two coats, 2 bottles of white for the legs, and 1 bottle of gold for the metal. Each can is $5.98, so our total cost was only $57.59 after tax. Not too bad for a dinning set.

The best part about this project is that it came with two leafs, so when we have guests over, we can extend the table to fit more people. The leafs store away perfectly in his storage closet and don’t take up too much space. Rogan’s less than $60 table and chairs has already been more than worth the investment we put into it. This dinning set was brought back to life and is being used for what it was made for rather than being taken to the dump. This is why I love restoring furniture!
